Ukraine, Climate and COVID and the consequences for food security.

The war in Ukraine shows the fragile position of our global food supply. Wheat supplies are at risk in the Middle East and Africa. Add to this the climate crisis and Covid-related transportation bottlenecks. What is the role of innovation in the food chain to better manage such crises.

At the Global Food Summit 2022 in Munich, Maximo Torero, Chief Economist of the FAO, gave an overview of the interdependencies of Global Supply Chains, prices for fertilizers depending on gas supplies, how they effect the prices of basic food commodities like wheat, corn or rice. In the end the cost for food worldwide will influence the stability of food security to the world’s population - is there a perfect storm brewing?

Does bioeconomy help with closed nutrient cycles to become less dependent on finite resources? Can food chains be made more resilient through innovation? Can new breeding methods contribute solutions for innovative urban food production?

These topics along the food supply chain have been discussed on June 8 at the Global Food Summit.
We thank all the participants who contributed their knowledge and insight, their creativity in new food inventions with the clear objective to build a sustainable future of food.
Especially our partner country Brazil, represented by the Brazilian Ambassador and a delegation from Brazil, with the three most important start-ups and the research cooperation Embrapa gave an insight in the strategies and leading projects.

We got the chance to listen to great speeches and presentations from the some of the greatest minds in food and science. We learned about Brazil as well as Israel or from start ups of EIT Food Central, about the magic world of mushrooms, milk with out cows or the scalability of fermenting bioreactors.
